What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are aromatic liquids distilled or extracted from shrubs, flowers, roots, bushes, trees, fruit, and seeds. Many have termed essential oils as the "life blood" or "life energy" of the plant. They are believed to have therapeutic properties (hence their use in aromatherapy) and can help promote, support and maintain overall wellness in a variety of ways!

Below are some wonderful benefits of essential oils...

*Uplift physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness and awareness

*Clean & purify your home from dish soap, laundry detergent, hand soap, and much more!

*Personal care from toothpaste, body lotions & soaps, lip balms, and much more!

*Enrich flavor in food and drinks

*Add supplements to your daily regimen to support and maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle

How Do You Use Essential Oils and How Do They Work?

Essential Oils can be used in 3 different ways (as seen below). * Always follow instructions on the individual label of each oil, and follow these general safety precautions.

1
APPLY TO SKIN (topical)*

Just like how we apply lotion for dry skin, nicotene patches to assit with quitting cigarrette smoking, or neosporin to prevent infection to a wound, some essential oils can be applied topically for the skin to absorb its therapeutic properties.

- Always check the individual label on the bottle for proper usage instructions

- Peform a spot skin test before applying to other areas to ensure against adverse reactions

- Additional safety precautions

INHALE

Essential Oils can be inhaled through the nose or the mouth. You can inhale directly from the bottle or add to a diffuser. The University of Minnesota's Center for Spirituality and Healing provides a wonderful explanation of the beneficial connection of our olfactory system (sense of smell), essential oils, and our limbic system as:

"The olfactory system includes all physical organs or cells relating to, or contributing to, the sense of smell. When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain. Molecules inhaled through the nose or mouth are also carried to the lungs and interact with the respiratory system. Thus, inhaled essential oils can affect the body through several systems and pathways.

Interaction with the Limbic System (Emotional Brain): During inhalation, odor molecules travel through the nose and affect the brain through a variety of receptor sites, one of which is the limbic system, which is commonly referred to as the "emotional brain."The limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance (Higley & Higley, 1998). This relationship helps explain why smells often trigger emotions. Knowing this, we can hypothesize how inhalation of essential oils can have some very profound physiological and psychological effects!"

- Always check the individual label on the bottle for proper usage instructions

- Additional safety precautions

INGEST
(oral consumption)*

Ingesting essential oils has been a conflicting topic. Always follow the individual label instructions for each essential oil, and check with a licensed healthcare professional who is familiar with essential oils prior to oral consumpton.
